Roman Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar in the main event of Wrestlemania 38 in a Title vs. Title unification match. This resulted in the winner becoming the holder of both the WWE and Universal Championships in the WWE. At that point, the move of WWE unifying the two top titles of their company was majorly criticized.
It went even bigger since WWE never built an opponent to the stature of Roman Reigns who can eventually challenge for the championships. This is the reason why the two top titles haven’t been defended on WWE television for almost two long months since the crowning moment. Besides, with Raw and Smackdown being different entities on different broadcast networks, it doesn’t make any sense to unify the top titles of the two separate shows.
According to a recent update from WrestleVotes, there was a simple reason as to why Roman Reigns unified both the WWE Title and the WWE Universal Title together as WWE wanted him to appear on both Raw and SmackDown shows on a regular occasion following Wrestlemania 38. Ultimately, the plan backfired as the dual champion went into performing on a lighter schedule.

It was recently reported, that Roman Reigns was booked to appear in only one Raw episode during the entire summer, the go-home episode of Summerslam 2022 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City on July 25. Plus, he was not booked for WWE’s last bygone Hell In A Cell premiere live event a few weeks ago while he also missed the Money In The Bank PLE in Las Vegas.
Roman Reigns defended his title at Summerslam 2022
As per the recent reports, Roman Reigns was scheduled to defend his WWE Universal Title against Randy Orton at Summerslam 2022. The storyline began as Orton was taken out by The Bloodline a few weeks ago on Smackdown after The Usos became the Undisputed WWE tag team champions by defeating Orton and Riddle. However. Reigns vs. Lesnar was booked in the absence of Orton due to an injury.
Then on May 22, following a live event victory against Drew McIntyre, Roman Reigns cut a promo on his non-televised house show appearances becoming lighter, moving forward.
“From the bottom of my heart, I appreciate all of ya’ll,” he said. “I obviously had the Internet talking last week or the week before that. I’m not going to be doing too many live events like these, on Sundays, going forward. So, this could be my last one.”
