This week on RAW, Drew McIntyre was able to win back the WWE Championship by defeating Randy Orton. This put an end to The Viper’s reign with his 14th world championship. Fans did expect this outcome after the interaction McIntyre and Roman Reigns had on this past episode of SmackDown. So now, these two will have a gigantic showdown, this Sunday night.
Drew McIntyre will be facing Roman Reigns at Survivor Series in a non-title champion vs champion match which will have two top superstars competing against each other. Reason Drew McIntyre vs Roman Reigns Happening at WWE Survivor Series 2020
During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained why WWE took a decision to switch the WWE Championship at the very last minute of the Survivor Series build. At the end of the day, the booking came down to them wanting to host a babyface vs heel match on November 22nd with Drew McIntyre taking on Roman Reigns.

Plus, they didn’t have really much going on heading into the show and this sudden win receive attention from the audience.
“They had nothing going on and they had already done a bunch of Randy Orton/ Drew McIntyre matches that Drew McIntyre kept winning, and to keep it going they had to have Randy Orton win one, so they did. In the end, I guess they could have held off until the pay-per-view, but I guess they wanted a babyface/heel dynamic in this match.” (Transcription by Ringside News)
It was noted that Randy Orton vs Roman Reigns would have been a “nothing match” at Survivor Series. There’s no doubt about their veteran instincts but it would have been two heels fighting out. Plus, they previously had matches on several occasions which is the main reason, the audience didn’t have much interest in the lineup. Fans may have started cheering for Roman Reigns, and that’s not what WWE wants right now.
As a result, Drew McIntyre had to be inserted into the title picture to improve the situation. Being a top babyface, he would bring out cheers from fans while for all the rightful reasons.
