WWE has always considered Madison Square Garden to be their home in New York City. That venue has been the host for a number of historic pro wrestling events in the past, mostly for the WWE brand, itself. Now, they are hosting a SmackDown episode, approximately two months from now, marking the company’s return to the World’s Most Famous Arena.
PWInsider previously reported that WWE would be coming back with a live Smackdown episode at the Madison Square Garden on September 10. This week, WWE included MSG in a list of upcoming events and thereby sent out a press release to confirm their comeback to the NYC arena. They will air a live episode of Friday Night SmackDown on FOX from The Garden.

WWE hosted a pair of Raw and Smackdown episodes from Madison Square Garden in September 2019 while this time around, they have only booked a date for the blue brand. Our inside sources mention a couple of reasons behind WWE excluding the red brand from having an episode at the historic venue. The lack of star power on Raw is the key reason why they have only booked a Friday night episode from that venue.

WWE will utilize star power for the Madison Square Garden show
The biggest star of the active WWE roster, Roman Reigns will be present on Smackdown to entertain the audience while Hall of Famer Edge will also make an appearance on that special episode set from Madison Square Garden. Also, John Cena is set to make a return to the WWE, this summer for the blue brand who will be booked on that particular night to make an appearance.
These three stars are expected to be the main attractions of the Madison Square Garden night alongside the likes of Sasha Banks, Rey Mysterio, and Bianca Belair. In the case of Raw, a Drew McIntyre of Bobby Lashley won’t be enough to sell out an audience in NYC. Plus, it doesn’t make sense to call The Undertaker or the Stone Cold Steve Austin every time WWE visits that area.
In general, WWE also runs Madison Square Garden for their annual post-Christmas non-televised live event on December 26, but no confirmation is available on that booking for this year. As for September, the company will be on the road to the Clash of Champions 2021 edition.
