Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns forced the professional wrestling industry to discuss his future in wrestling after a recent promo. Following his title retention against another top Smackdown star Drew McIntyre, the dual champion opened up in the live event held in Trenton, New Jersey.
Roman Reigns indicated that he didn’t know if he’d be back in the city. He also proceeded to say that he’s moving on to a “new phase” in his life and career which was an apparent tease of transitioning into a Hollywood career.
“I’ve been here a couple of times in the past 10 years,” the WWE Universal Champion said. “I’m starting to work into a new phase in my career, and I honestly don’t know if I’ll be back here again. If that’s the case, I just wanna say thank you for all these years of support.”

Now, WWE Universe members and beyond were under the impression that the reigning champion was teasing his retirement from professional wrestling but that’s not the case. In an update from Fightful, one source backstage in WWE says that Roman Reigns is still heavily figured into creative plans for “the foreseeable future” and they don’t see him leaving “anytime soon”.
Roman Reigns not scheduled for any WWE hiatus
Producers, staff, and higher-ups in the company have not been informed of any upcoming extended absences for Roman Reigns. Although, his house show date numbers will be fewer in the coming months, the top superstar will keep WWE his top priority. Here’s more from the source,
“One source indicated to Fightful that Roman Reigns is likely to be accomodated and incentivized to keep WWE his priority after they’ve focused programming around him, as WWE doesn’t see an end in sight with him factored in.
This is a stark contrast from John Cena and The Rock, who aren’t expected by WWE to have full-time runs again. Another person in the company indicated that they believed Reigns was referencing that eventually his schedule will likely include less house show events.”
It was pointed out in the report that Roman Reigns has had four televised matches this year, 25 house shows, and nine dark matches. It’s pretty clear that his wrestling schedule especially on TV has been reduced, significantly already. But he will still be on pace to wrestle over 100 matches in 2022.
At the 2022 WWE WrestleMania Backlash pay-per-view event, RAW Tag Team Champions RK-Bro and Drew McIntyre went head-to-head against SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos and Roman Reigns in non-title six-man action to come up short. After this outing, Reigns is expected to feature in another wrestling match on TV at next month’s Hell in a Cell Premium Live Event.
