WWE will kick things off for the Wrestlemania 39 season in a big way via Royal Rumble 2023 set for the final January weekend. Following Survivor Series WarGames, there will be a gap of more than a couple of months between the two pay-per-view events which is odd in the WWE calendar. This is because WWE Day 1 scheduled for January 1 has been canceled.
Triple H took over WWE creative charges and he’s come up with different policies around the PPVs. Hence, Royal Rumble 2023 was reinstated as the first WWE Network Specials of this year after an exceptional Day 1 edition of 2022. That being said, two gimmick matches are being reported to be the plan as WWE kicks off the Road to WrestleMania 39.

Wrestling News reports that WWE is currently considering a Hell in a Cell match for Royal Rumble 2023. It was not updated which two participants will be competing in that match,
“There’s been talk in WWE about a Hell in a Cell match happening at the Royal Rumble PLE.”

Interesting ideas being nurtured for Royal Rumble 2023
Previously, reports claimed that WWE has been planning to Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens for the Undisputed WWE Title for the January PLE. Given the bad blood between the two, it seems like these two could end up battling inside the hellacious structure to prevent The Bloodline members from interfering in the match.
Triple H made it clear in the media conference after Survivor Series WarGames that Hell in a Cell match is “blow-off” matches and hence this gimmick lost its yearly pay-per-view events from next year onward. Rather, we will witness this match on random occasions like Royal Rumble 2023 where major fed needs to culminate.
Pitch black match pitched for Royal Rumble
Reports have also claimed that “a pitch that was made for a “Pitch Black” match, and it was being seriously considered for the Royal Rumble event.” This idea is for Bray Wyatt due to his gimmick, but nothing regarding this has been discussed with the entire creative team.
Ringside News asked around about the reported plan for this match at Royal Rumble 2023. A tenured member of the creative team informed the source that they “have not heard” anything regarding this. We’ll have to probably wait until next month to know more about this interesting match that might go down at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
