During the bygone June 17 edition of Smackdown, the main event of Summerslam 2022 was officially announced. Brock Lesnar returned to the show, looking for vengeance against his long-time rival, and succeeded in doing that.
In his first appearance in WWE since his WrestleMania 38 loss to Roman Reigns, Lesnar laid out the Bloodline faction on SmackDown with a plethora of F5s. After this, WWE announced that Reigns vs. Lesnar in a Last Man Standing Match for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship will take place in the main event of Summerslam 2022.
Summerslam 2022: Liv Morgan’s WWE Smackdown Women’s Title Reign To Continue?
Since the confirmation of the match, there’s been an uproar amongst the WWE Universe about WWE re-booking the same lineup for time and time again over the top titles. This would be the ninth time that the two titans will collide against each other. But then again WWE ran out of options while setting things up for Summerslam 2022.
Originally, SummerSlam 2022 was about to see Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton for the Undisputed Title, per the earlier reports of Wrestling Observer. However, the same source noted earlier that Orton is out of action with a back injury and Riddle confirmed the same on SmackDown by noting that Orton will undergo surgery.

Randy Orton’s injury changed Summerslam 2022 main event
Per WWE’s earlier statement Orton is “undergoing consultations with neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine surgeons to determine the extent of his injury,” but that update could be storyline-based as the surgery will fix his bruised back for dropping opponents with RKOs for all these years.
Orton’s absence is the reason why WWE was forced to book Lesnar against Reigns, this time in a Gimmick Match (No top superstar not involved in a feud was left to face Reigns at the biggest event of the summer other than Lesnar). This matchup will hopefully be enough to sell out the Nissan Stadium for Summerslam 2022 premium live event.
It should be noted that the much-anticipated Roman Reigns vs. Drew McIntyre matchup is being saved by the WWE for Clash At The Castle in the UK in September and hence McIntyre hasn’t been booked to face Reigns at SummerSlam 2022.
Summerslam 2022 takes place on July 30 at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, and Reigns vs. Lesnar is going to be the main event of the show.
