A permanent spot was open for the NXT announce table ever since Mauro Ranallo left the company last month. Wade Barrett used that opportunity and negotiated a deal to ensure he gets employed with the company that made his name famous, back in the last decade.
The former King of the Ring winner has spoken with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated to reveal that he has signed a one-year contract with the WWE. There are clauses that include an option to extend the partnership.

Wade Barrett said that he only hopes this stint works out for a long time. He also mentioned the old “Bad News Barrett” gimmick, joking that there could “bad news” coming from him, anytime.
“I hope this lasts for a long time, that’s our intent,” Barrett said of the new one-year deal with an option to extend the partnership. “So there is no bad news to share, but never forget, there is always a little bad news up my sleeve.”
The interview moved forward as the context of an in-ring return eventually arrived. Wade Barrett is not ruling out that, but at this point, he remains passionate for commentary only. He also informed that the previous neck injury he left WWE with, in 2016, has healed.
“Pro wrestling has always been a true love of mine, especially commentary. Physically, I feel 100%. My body feels incredibly good. I’m not doing commentary because I had a career-ending injury. I want to focus on commentary because I’m passionate about it. That’s not to say I won’t pull the boots back on at some point, but commentary is my focus and I am extremely excited about it.”
Wade Barrett first signed a WWE developmental contract in 2007 and left the company in May 2016 as the deal eventually expired. He is a five-time Intercontinental Champion who has since focused on his acting career. He was less interested in the world of pro wrestling until now but he did some commentary work for the NWA, earlier this year.
