The 2023 WWE Royal Rumble Premium Live Event kicked things off for Wrestlemania 39. It witnessed the return of Cody Rhodes to the ring, who went on to win the men’s Royal Rumble match while Rhea Ripley won the women’s Royal Rumble match to cement their spots at the main event capacity of the Show of Shows.
While these two have approached a step closer to fulfilling their dream of becoming champions at WrestleMania 39, another veteran superstar could also be looking forward to doing so. Coming off a historic performance at the 2023 men’s Rumble match, Gunther could be up for a major championship match at the April PLE.
Huge IC Title match planned for Wrestlemania
Going by the reports, it looks like the Intercontinental Championship could change hands at WrestleMania 39. According to an update from Xero News, Sheamus is pushing for the final of the trilogy against Gunther at the biggest event of the year while some of the WWE Officials are pushing for Drew McIntyre to end Gunther’s reign on that same event,
“Source says Sheamus has been pushing for his trilogy match with Gunther at WrestleMania, but it is currently undecided. Drew McIntyre is the other option WWE have spoke about for Gunther & the Intercontinental Championship.
Source added – there are some internally pushing for Drew to dethrone Gunther at WrestleMania.”
Final of a trilogy could go down at Wrestlmania 39
Time will tell whether Gunther will drop his title and suffer possibly his first major pinfall loss on the main roster at Wrestlemania 39. He won the Intercontinental Title from Ricochet on the June 10th, 2022 episode of SmackDown.
Since winning the belt, He has been trying to restore the prestige back into the mid-card title. Already in his ongoing reign, he’s beaten top names like Sheamus and Braun Strowman to almost reach the 250-day landmark.
Previously, the two collided at Clash at the Castle and on Smackdown for the IC title to tear the house down in matches those earned praises from the critics as well as the audience. Slotting them on the card of Wrestlemania 39 could be a good idea, after all as they get to rewrite history. For the time being, Gunther will soak in his success from Royal Rumble as he spent the longest time spent in a single men’s Rumble match, surpassing Rey Mysterio.
