While there’s still no confirmation available, the popular belief is that John Cena will be back in the WWE to be on the Wrestlemania 39 card. He’s currently slated to feature in a match with an existing champion be it a title or non-title match, affair.
Last year in the summer, on the June 27th episode of Raw, Austin Theory confronted Cena in a backstage segment after Cena came back to WWE for a one-off night to celebrate his 20th anniversary in WWE. This started rumors that WWE was planting seeds for a Cena vs. Theory match at WrestleMania 39.

Moving on, Logan Paul openly stated on his podcast that he pitched Triple H the idea of him competing against Cena at WrestleMania 39. This then started rumors of a Cena vs. Paul match at the Show of Shows. But after Logan eliminated Seth Rollins at the Men’s Royal Rumble match, it’s almost confirmed that these are set for a clash.
WWE going forward with original Mania plans for Cena
In addition, now Wrestling Observer has reported that WWE is going back to their original plan for WrestleMania 39 – John Cena vs. Austin Theory. In an update to the situation, Xero News has mentioned that Cena vs. Theory is scheduled to take place on Night One of WrestleMania Hollywood on Saturday, April 1.
At present, Cena is filming the Ricky Stanicky movie with Zac Efron in Australia. He reportedly won’t be available for the build-up for this match on the Road to WrestleMania 39 and the possibility is that he will directly show up at Show of Shows.
The 16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion was last seen in action on WWE TV back on the December 30th, 2022 episode of SmackDown, where he teamed up with Kevin Owens to defeat the team of Sami Zayn and Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns.
