Earlier reports from late 2022 suggested that John Cena would compete in a match at WrestleMania 39 in April after a gap of three years. Primarily, Logan Paul was supposed to be his opponent since he himself wanted the match from WWE’s creative team head Paul “Triple H” Levesque. Plus, the match was also teased through Cena as he posted Logan’s photo on Instagram.
However, as we get closer to WrestleMania 39, WWE made it clear that they had planned something different around Cena’s match which should include the United States Champion Austin Theory. The company has confirmed matches like the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match between Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes, the main event of the Showcase of Immortals.

The Raw and SmackDown Women’s Championship matches have also been confirmed alongside Brock Lesnar vs. Omos. Plus, Logan Paul vs. Seth Rollins is also on its way to being inserted into the match card of WrestleMania 39 as these two are involved in a beef ahead of the grand event. Since Logan is involved in a different match other than John Cena, it’s certain that WWE changed their minds about this particular match.

John Cena was legit booked in a match against Logan Paul at WrestleMania 39
Wrestling News reported behind their Patreon paywall that there was a time when John Cena was “penciled in” to feature in a match against the celebrity Logan Paul. This does make sense the former MMA was throwing out some subtle hints about facing the WWE Superstar in a singles match to elevate his career to the next level but things then changed at a quick pace,
“Sometime in the fall, WWE had Cena penciled in for a match against Logan Paul. In fact, Cena teased this on social media and Paul has stated that he would love to have a WrestleMania match with him. That was the match that was planned as of December but by January they pivoted to Logan Paul vs. Seth Rollins.”
WWE is trying to build Austin Theory as a future main eventer for the company and the process started with the superstar winning the United States Title as well as the 2023 Elimination Chamber match. Now, Working with John Cena on the grand stage of WrestleMania 39 is supposed to give him a huge push. Cena is always said to be on board with young WWE Superstars to help them go to the next level. Hence, Theory’s one big rub of the career is waiting within a few weeks.
