His title reign is going stronger day by day and he’s on the verge of breaking a massive accolade. It’s tough to find an opponent who could give him a tough challenge. However, reports suggest that his reign could be in serious jeopardy around the Show of Shows.
GUNTHER up for a big match at Wrestlemania?
Reports suggest that WWE is moving ahead with plans for a blockbuster triple-threat encounter at WrestleMania 39. The Austrian superstar captured the title on WWE SmackDown in June 2022 from Ricochet. Moving on, he went through some solid title defenses against the likes of Braun Strowman, Sheamus, and even Ricochet. However, his toughest defense should be waiting at the Show of Shows.

It was previously reported that WWE was planning on GUNTHER vs. Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 39 while the final match in the Sheamus vs. GUNTHER trilogy was also speculated. But none of these matches could become a reality as WWE is possibly sketching a multi-person match.

WrestleVotes now reports that WWE is considering an epic triple-threat match where the leader of Imperium will defend his Intercontinental Title against Drew McIntyre and Sheamus,
“I’m told while not decided 100%, there are plans to feature an Intercontinental Championship 3 way match at WrestleMania: Gunther vs. Sheamus vs. Drew McIntyre.
There are a number of supporters within creative that not only want the match, but they want it towards the top. TBD.”
GUNTHER is approaching becoming the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion since 2005 on the Road to WrestleMania 39. If GUNTHER holds on to his belt for five more days then he will surpass the previous record held by Shelton Benjamin’s reign and become the new longest-reigning IC title-holder of this millennium.
GUNTHER has been built as a strong champion since arriving on the main roster. As the Road to WrestleMania 39 began with Royal Rumble 2023, he delivered another record-shattering performance by lasting in the match for more than 72 minutes.
Previous reports also suggested that Drew McIntyre could be the person to dethrone GUNTHER from the title reign, given he’s also the top babyface superstar of the SmackDown brand. Hence, he could move into a fresh feud over the IC Title alongside Sheamus to set up the match at WrestleMania 39.
