WWE is heading into the first of the next three international premium live events, next month in the form of WWE Backlash 2023. Going by the ongoing storyline on Monday Night Raw, the company will also be hosting one of the biggest first-time-ever matches on that night in recent history and the question is why that match will go down in one of the smaller PLEs following Wrestlemania 39.
The storyline targeting WWE Backlash 2023 started after Brock Lesnar showed up on Raw to team up with Cody Rhodes against The Bloodline. If they would have won then Cody could receive a championship rematch against Roman Reigns. The latter retained his undisputed title against Rhodes at the latest bygone WWE PLE, Wrestlemania 39.
WWE Raw: Brock Lesnar Announced For Backlash 2023 Go-Home Episode
Over on Raw, the tag team match never took place since Lesnar decimated Rhodes to close out the show in the main event segment. Using chairs and steel ring steps as weapons, Brock laid the former contender of the dual championship out in his first heel turn since returning to WWE in the summer of 2021.
Cody Rhodes challenged Brock Lesnar at WWE Backlash 2023
Then on the April 10 episode of Raw, Cody Rhodes addressed the attack by Lesnar and challenged him to a match at WWE Backlash 2023. Lesnar didn’t respond to the question but the match was confirmed during his return on the red brand on the April 17 episode.
PWInsider reports that Lesnar was never scheduled to appear on this week’s Raw and sources have further informed that Lesnar was on a family vacation. But he will be returning for this mega match against Rhodes. Plus, the match is taking place at WWE Backlash 2023, as a promotional deal with Puerto Rico. The PLE will serve as a promotion for the area, which raises the expectations high to get some more big-time matches.
Cody Rhodes will feature in this huge match while the other names speculated for WWE Backlash 2023 call for Rey Mysterio to team with Bad Bunny to face Dominik Mysterio and Damian Priest at the event. Bad Bunny will also serve as the host of the PLE, which will take place in San Juan, on May 6 from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
