The fifth annual Battleground PPV was hosted last night by Smackdown brand. We witnessed a hellacious Punjabi Prison match to determine the WWE Champion in the main event of the night.
Plus, there were seven other matches on the card to set the tone for Summerslam. Check out the results from Battleground hosted by the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania:
The Usos vs. the New Day (Smackdown tag team Championship)
Battleground kicked off with the tag team title match where we have crowned the new tag team champions. Despite the mean streak from the Usos, Kofi Kingston was able to deliver the Trouble In Paradise. Woods followed it up with a big elbow off the top rope to get the pinfall.
Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin
It was expected to be a great match but turned out to be a pretty dud. Nakamura was rolling during the end but Baron Corbin gave a low blow to get himself disqualified. He then left the ring after giving Nakamura a low blow.
AJ Styles vs. Kevin Owens (United States Championship)
Kevin Owens pulled off an upset by ending AJ Styles’ title run in the shortest time. The champion locked in the cross face to make Owens choke out but the challenger countered by putting his shoulder down for the three count and win back the US title.
Sami Zayn vs. Mike Kanellis (with Maria Kanellis)
Sami Zayn was able to claim his redemption against Mike by upstaging the antics of Maria. Zayn connected with an exploder suplex and the Helluva kick to pin his bitter rival.
John Cena vs. Rusev (Flag match)
The franchise player picked up yet another big win against Rusev. He countered the Accolade by turning it into an AA through the table to his opponent. He was the one to pull off the USA flag from the corner to come out as the victorious one at Battleground.
Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Tamina vs. Lana (fatal-5-way elimination match)
Becky Lynch made Tamina and Lana tap out with the arm breaker. But, Natalya rolled her up to bring the contest to her and Charlotte. The Queen was shoved into the ropes and her neck hit hard on that. This allowed Natalya to roll her up again to get the pinfall and become the number one contender.
Jinder Mahal vs. Randy Orton (WWE Championship Punjabi Prison match)
Randy Orton was about to win the match by walking out of the Punjabi Prison. He even overcame the odds of Singh Brothers, as well. But, to a shock, The Great Khali walked into the arena and attacked Orton on the bamboo wall. Orton got choked out and Jinder Mahal took advantage of it. He walked out of the prison to retain his title.
