The tradition of hosting WWE Battleground started in the last decade during the fall but it was soon dragged to a different timeslot. Sandwiched between Money in the Bank and SummerSlam, it served as a filler for the second-biggest show premium live event in professional wrestling. It was tough to build up the same as it fell between two great sports and entertainment-oriented shows.
For all the right reasons, WWE Battleground had its critics but it survived for more than five years before the company finally scrapped the tradition of hosting more pay-per-views in a calendar year. Going by the recent updates, chances are there that the event could find its way back to WWE programming but not as a main roster show.

According to the latest trademark filed by WWE in the latter portion of March, WWE Battleground PPV was set to return as “NXT Battleground”. WWE hosted this pay-per-view name from 2013 to 2017, before finally retiring it. In the last edition, it was delivered as a SmackDown exclusive show.

WWE Battleground 2023 to be NXT’s first PLE in the summer
WWE had previously brought back old pay-per-views to use for their developmental brand in recent times. WWE Battleground will join that list. Some of those examples are given below,
– Great American Bash
– Halloween Havoc
– In Your House
– Vengeance (as NXT Vengeance Day)
– Roadblock
The first NXT premium live event of 2023 was NXT Vengeance Day in early February followed by the NXT Stand & Deliver 2023 edition during the WrestleMania 39 weekend, taking place on April 1st, just a few hours before the Show of Shows.
The main event of the show saw Bron Breakker (son of WWE Hall of Famer Rick Steiner) defending his NXT Championship against Carmelo Hayes. Now, WWE Battleground is likely to serve as the next scheduled WWE Network Specials from the NXT brand.
It was back on the July 29, 2013, episode of Raw, that the WWE Battleground was announced to go down on October 6 of that year at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York. It replaced Over the Limit, which was the annual event in May from 2010 to 2012.
In 2013, Over The Limit was scheduled for October 2013 but WWE decided to discontinue it. Battleground returned in 2014 in July and it was also WWE’s first event to air on their online streaming service, the WWE Network, which launched earlier that year in February.
