WWE’s next big event is going to be Clash at the Castle 2022 from the United Kingdom and two of the native superstars from that region will battle it out for the mid-card title from the Smackdown brand. As seen on this week’s Smackdown, WWE confirmed the lineup for the next Intercontinental Championship match for the PLE.

The reigning Intercontinental Champion Gunther will defend his title against top Smackdown superstar Sheamus at Clash at the Castle. This is a fresh lineup for the title match. Plus, it’s interesting to note that both these names play bad guys on TV. Hence, this is going to be a heel vs. heel lineup on the WWE roster.

WWE Clash At The Castle 2022: New Championship Match Announced 1

The August 19 episode of Smackdown featured a Fatal-5-Way Number-One Contenders match for the Intercontinental title. The five participants of the match were Sheamus, Happy Corbin, Ricochet, Madcap Moss, and Sami Zayn.

The finish of the match saw Sami Zayn hit a Helluva Kick on Ricochet but Corbin pulled Zayn before he could get the pin. After beating down Ricochet, Corbin sent Zayn shoulder-first into the ring post. Sheamus then came out of nowhere with a Brogue Kick on Corbin for the pin to win and solidify his title match opportunity at Clash at the Castle 2022.

Previously, Sheamus lost the opportunity to challenge for the Undisputed WWE Universal Title by coming up short against Drew McIntyre on Smackdown, a few weeks ago in the first-ever Irish Donnybrooke Match.

But now The Celtic Warrior gets the chance to become WWE’s 27th Grand Slam Champion if he wins the title at Clash at the Castle 2022. This is the only title that he hadn’t captured in his 14-year main roster tenure in the WWE. The last title he held in WWE was the United States Championship in 2021.
