SmackDown Women’s Champion Asuka has now received a confirmed opponent at Royal Rumble. It will be none other than Becky Lynch who will challenge her for the title at Royal Rumble PPV. This will be for the first time ever that these two will compete in a one-on-one matchup in the WWE. The audience will love the fresh pairing, indeed.
We should remind you that Becky Lynch lost the Smackdown women’s championship at WWE TLC. It was a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match where Asuka was the first one to climb the ladder and grab the title to win it. This automatically sets up a rematch between Asuka and Becky Lynch since WWE rules say so.
But the McMahons have changed automatic rematch rules on the roster, for now. No champion that loses the title can’t demand a future opportunity, anymore. This is why Becky Lynch had to earn the chance on this week’s Smackdown. She defeated Carmella and Charlotte Flair in a Triple Threat to become the new #1 contender.

Earlier the speculation was that Becky Lynch will enter the Royal Rumble match being a favorite. She seemed focussed to get a match against Ronda Rousey at Wrestlemania 35. It is notable that the WWE Raw women’s champion is the reason why we have witnessed a title change at WWE TLC. She pushed both Becky and Charlotte from the ladder to cost the match.
This was definitely a setup for a future Wrestlemania matchup between the two of them. Also, Becky Lynch was a clear cut favorite to win women’s Royal Rumble to confirm the match. But now it seems she is off from the battle royal as WWE already booked her in a separate title match. Does this mean that the dream match against Ronda Rousey is not on the card?
Probably, no since Becky Lynch continued taking shots to the ‘baddest woman on the planet’. This is what she had stated in an interview with WWE.com,
“There are some things that I couldn’t take account for, such as Ronnie sticking her weirdo head in where it doesn’t belong, and interfering in my match and costing me my championship. That’s the kind of coward that she is, that’s the kind of coward they have on RAW. That’s not the kind of champion we had on SmackDown because the champion we had on SmackDown made the SmackDown Women’s Championship the talk of the world, and it changed the entire industry.”
She also talked about things being unfair to her. First, she had to drop the belt in a first-ever Triple Threat TLC match. Then the authority figure made her compete in another triple threat to earn the rematch. This is actually good since it garners more sympathy towards ‘The Man’.
