WWE News: Chris Jericho Was About To Win The Universal Championship At Wrestlemania 33

Chris Jericho might be the only one from the Attitude Era who has been a mainstay performer in the WWE, till date. He has gone for a short hiatus in order to fulfil his commitments to his music band, Fozzy. But, as per the reports he will soon make his return to Smackdown Live.

Now, it has been almost seven long years that he has held a world title. Last time he won the prime title was in the year 2010. He won the Elimination Chamber match to take the title back from the Undertaker. The reign remained for a short span of time after Jack Swagger cashed in his Money in the Bank contract just over a month later.

Since his last stint in the WWE was a remarkable one, many sources suggested that Vince McMahon will hand Jericho with a title reign, for sure. The way he carried Monday Night Raw for the better part of last year, it was amazing.

Recently while appearing on Busted Open Radio, Chris Jericho revealed the actual planning for him at Wrestlemania 33. Kevin Owens was the one to enter the Citrus Bowl as the reigning Universal champion. Y2J was pitted to win the title from him taking the ultimate revenge.

However, the plans were abruptly changed since WWE was able to get Goldberg back in the company. A long term plan was sketched around him and hence Vince went ahead with the idea of crowning Goldberg as the new champion.

Chris Jericho also revealed that Brock Lesnar was the one who was scheduled to face him at the Payback PPV and defeat him for the championship. He would then go on to a tour with his band, Fozzy. Check out the excerpts from his interview, here:

“I was supposed to finish up after WrestleMania, that Monday afterwards. About, I don’t know, December maybe Vince (McMahon) called me in, he had a big idea. I can probably say this now: the original idea as things change all the time, exclusive for Busted Open, was for me and Kevin Owens to work at WrestleMania, for me to win the title, and then to lose it to Brock in Sacramento at the next pay-per-view, which was April 30. So when you get presented with that idea it’s like ‘well, sure, of course, I’ll stay for that.’

However, the GOAT had to be satisfied with the United States championship around his waist at Wrestlemania. For now, the chances are that he would return at the Money in the Bank PPV to continue his feud against Kevin Owens.
