The mega match between John Cena and Rusev has been confirmed for the Battleground PPV. After the franchise player of the company returned to the blue brand, he was cutting a promo on the Independence Day of America. Being an anti-USA superstar, Rusev showed up on the segment interrupting it.
Following the heated confrontation that they had on Tuesday Night’s show, the General Manager, Daniel Bryan booked a match between these two at the upcoming Smackdown-exclusive PPV. An old bitter rivalry will be renewed by virtue of this with a newer stipulation for the match.
As clarified by the GM, it is going to be a flag match for between them. It means that neither of them has to be pinned or submitted in order to lose the match. The first one to grab their respective flag from his corner will be declared as the winner. Now, according to the sources, there’s a reason for this kind of stipulation added to the contest.
Bryan Alvarez from Wrestling Observer Newsletter stated that the WWE Creative is actually looking forward to letting Rusev pick up the win over the Cenation Leader. It will be a great way for Cena to put over a younger talent like Rusev who needs to go to the main event spotlight, for a long time now.
So, what better way to take him there by giving him a win against the 16-time world champion prior to Summerslam? The flag match will ensure that Cena will not be pinned or submitted by the Bulgarian Brute and hence there will no problem of going into a marquee match at the Battleground PPV on July 23rd.
This win will help Rusev to brag about the win for months to come and demand a championship opportunity. He really needs the win at this point in his career where he is totally new to the Smackdown roster. On the other hand, a loss would not certainly affect Cena much.
John Cena might not even stay on Smackdown Live following Battleground since he is a ‘free agent’. If the show writers want him to go to Raw then he would move to the flagship brand in order to build up a match for Summerslam with a certain Raw-superstar.
