As reported previously, John Cena has been shifting his role from his earlier days. He is not only a WWE Superstar but transitioned into a global icon for the company. That’s been the reason he’s absent from the title picture for a long time and the main event scene, too.
Reddit user FormerHardcoreChamp noted an interesting statistics around Cena which shows that the franchise has not won a singles contest in a PPV match in over a year. It was last year at the Night of Champions PPV when he defeated Seth Rollins for the United States Championship. Since then he has competed only in four PPV events. Here are the outcomes:
Hell in a Cell 2015 – lost against Alberto Del Rio
Money in the Bank 2016 – lost against AJ Styles
Battleground 2016 – Won in a tag team contest
Summerslam 2016 – lost against AJ Styles
This stat shows that the face that runs the place had a vast change in his role for the company for the past few years. Otherwise not gaining a singles PPV win in a calendar year is not deserved from an all-time great that John Cena is.
In addition, he is also taking hiatus from the WWE after the No Mercy PPV. This will be after two long years when he is going to be featured in a main event title match in a PPV. It was in 2014’s Night of Champions PPV when he faced Brock Lesnar for the WWE world title. He is not expected to win the WWE World title and tie the record 16th World title of Ric Flair at No Mercy because of time off afterwards.
However, things will pick up for him once he returns in this year’s end. Creative has already planned something huge for Cena at Wrestlemania. He will either face Undertaker in his send-off match or compete for his 16th WWE World title match against AJ Styles.
