WWE News: John Cena to be Special Guest Referee at the Survivor Series PPV
John Cena was initially advertised for the Survivor Series PPV when the tickets for the event went on sale. He was in the middle of the promotional pictures indicating that the main event match would get reserved for him on that night. However, his schedule changed abruptly, and he went on a hiatus following the No Mercy PPV.
Consequently, the earlier ads where Cena was performing at the last dual brand PPV of the year was removed from the official website of the WWE, as well. Brock Lesnar replaced him as the main event attraction. The beast will feature in a champion vs champion match against Jinder Mahal in a cross-brand match.
Now, if recent reports are to be believed, then the Cenation Leader will be a part of the Survivor Series PPV in a special capacity. He will be acting as the special guest referee for the main event match on that night, as per reports from Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com.
The match that John Cena will officiate will be none other than the match between the Universal Champion vs the WWE Champion. Apparently, there’s a couple of reasons as of why Cena will get appointed to this role.
Currently, the 16-time world champion is the only free agent available to the company who can perform on both the brands. So, this makes a lot of sense if he is appointed to such a role to call down things right down in the middle. We can expect him not to be biased against any of the two competitors in this match.
Plus, Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that Jinder Mahal vs John Cena for the WWE Championship would be the main event of Wrestlemania 34. So, Cena acting as the referee will act as the catalyst for the upcoming feud.
Jinder Mahal is certainly scheduled to digest a loss to the Conqueror. But, he might go on to blame Cena for this loss and set up the feud once he returns later the year to perform on Smackdown Live. It will build up the much-anticipated feud between The Modern-Day Maharaja and the Face that runs the Place. Also, in that case, Jinder will continue to be the WWE Champion until Wrestlemania 34.
