WWE News: New Champion Crowned on Smackdown Live

As per the earlier announcements from WWE, the finals of the United States Championship was supposed to take place at the Royal Rumble PPV. The two semi-final matches were announced to take place on the weekly episodes of Smackdown Live, whereas, the title match to crown a new champion at the first dual-brand PPV of the evening.

Recently, rumours started floating around the internet that the schedule of the matches got changed. According to them, the final would have been preponed which happened on last night’s Smackdown, as we finished the entire tournament on a single night with the all the pending matches being over.

In the first match, Xavier Woods from The New Day competed against the Modern-Day Maharaja, Jinder Mahal. The unicorns and the Singh Brothers were standing at the corners for the opponents, respectively. As expected, the partners of the former WWE Champion provided the distraction for Woods that allowed Jinder to connect with his finishing manoeuvre and advance to the finale.

The night was not over with the India-origin superstar, as he came back to the ring to attack Bobby Roode right after winning the second semi-final match and become the second finalist. Roode was able to counter his attack and demand the final match right there in Laredo, Texas. Jinder declared that the title match would happen on next week’s show.

But, Daniel Bryan showed up out of nowhere in the scene declaring they don’t have to wait till next week to see a new champion, He confirmed that Bobby Roode vs Jinder Mahal would take place in the main event of the night.

So, Jinder Mahal was literally forced to compete for the US Championship, later the night. He had no advantages, whatsoever considering that the Singh Brothers were banned from the ringside area. Despite this, he punished Roode by eyeing the abdomen portion.

But, by the end, The Glorious One was able to connect with his pendant DDT to pick up the title. He became the new US champion which is his first singles title on the main roster. Afterwards, Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan celebrated with him to close the show.
