Summerslam is set to take over the pro-wrestling world starting from this month.
This is the second biggest event of the year that presents us with a match card featuring multiple main events. Major superstars from the WWE programming appear to perform on this particular night to make this one successful night. The show is returning to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York for the fourth straight year.
We already learned about multiple championship matches to take place at this year’s Summerslam PPV event. All of them will take place in the mainstay division of the WWE.
Now WWE has confirmed that the Cruiserweight Championship will also hang on the balance on that night. It is the first time since Wrestlemania that this division will perform in a PPV.
Cedric Alexander is the current champion of the Cruiserweight division. He was one of the cornerstones of the show ever since the re-launch of the division. Earlier this year, he competed against Mustafa Ali in the finale of the Cruiserweight title tournament at the biggest event of the years. They stole the show with a lightening quick-paced match. In the end, Cedric stood tall to come out as the winner.
The general manager of the 205 Live show has announced his next title defense will be at Summerslam PPV. Another regular member of the division will be his opponent at the upcoming PPV event. Drew Gulak won a fatal-4-way matchup defeating TJP, Mustafa Ali and Hideo Itami. So, he is getting his contractual title match on August 19th.
WWE.com confirmed this matchup with the following statements,
“As confirmed by 205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick, Alexander and Gulak will clash for the title at SummerSlam, marking Alexander’s biggest showcase since winning the championship at WrestleMania and the biggest opportunity yet for Gulak, who has long been bubbling under the surface as one of WWE’s most talented and fearsome grapplers.”
WWE had stopped using Cruiserweights on the mainstay division for a long time. They do not appear on Monday Night Raw or in the PPV shows anymore. Triple H is the head honcho of the division who wants to protect this talent. So they only compete on their on 205 Live show on Tuesday Nights. You can follow the shows exclusively on the WWE Network just after Smackdown Live.
