This week’s Smackdown Live opened with the most shocking news that the fans can expect. Shane McMahon announced that Paige will no longer act as the general manager of Smackdown Live. This did not mean that she is bidding goodbye to WWE TV. But we may see her in a different kind of role that is still up on the air.
The announcement of removing Paige from the general manager post comes as the McMahon family decided to come back in charge at the main roster shows. They do not want any middlemen to run the shows going forward with complains lodging on the social media about content quality. So respective GMs of the shows had to suffer.
In the case of Baron Corbin, WWE had a legit reason to remove him from the position. But when it comes to Paige, she was one of the most popular general managers of all-time. We have always seen her running the show with good authority power. Further, she was also a rating-booster for Smackdown being a pro-wrestling celebrity around the world.
So it came as a shocker that why would WWE want to keep someone like Paige off the show. Cagesideseats.com came up with a hint for WWE acting such with the former Divas Champion. It suggested that Paige will be busy promoting her autobiography-based movie, Fighting with my Family. So she needed this time-off from Smackdown programming.
We should remind you that WWE and The Rock’s Seven Bucks Production has made this film based on Paige. She is coming from a wrestling family in the United Kingdom. The film will portray the dysfunctional family drama to bring some comedic relief to the audience. It will also reveal the incredible journey of the anti-Diva of becoming a celebrity from just an indie wrestler.
The film will get a worldwide release in March 2019. The promotions for the project is likely to begin as early as 2019 kicks off. The Rock is acting both as an Executive Producer and an actor in this film. This confirms that the movie will get a high-profile release and needs the central character to get attached to it, throughout.
So it makes sense why WWE chose to keep Paige aside from TV, for now. With a global release, the company should get many crossover fans to the weekly programming. Zelina Vega is playing the key role of AJ Lee in this life-based movie. She has already taken a jab to Paige for not playing the lead role. This hints that WWE might just choose to start a storyline for the movie’s promotional purpose.
