Ric Fair, the legendary wrestling figure, holds the incredible record of winning the WWE title 16 times. It is the benchmark in the world of sports entertainment. But with John Cena emerging to catch up with the record, it is evident that someday it is going to happen.
The Nature Boy had those 16 titles in different promotions during his entire wrestling career. He had claimed eight world titles in NWA, six in WCW and two in the WWE. There have been plenty debatable situations during his title matches which make him a more than 16-time title holder. However, the controversial decisions were kept aside and only 16 of them were taken into consideration.
Some of the fans are okay with the fact while some are not. They are the same people who believe that Cena is not the one who deserves to beat Flair in terms of it. Cena is not being considered as one of the technically gifted athletes in the WWE.
Ric Flair made an appearance on the Busted Open podcast and said:
“Sixteen’s not the real number anyway. They just plain won’t recognize two of them, so that’s 18, and then there were three more. No, but I think the world of John and I would have no problem with that happening.”
Whether people like it or not, the WWE has planned of making Cena a 16-time World champion upon his return. We will see the history-making moment in 2017, predictably. Cena was out of the title picture scene with his part-time role for the last couple of years.
But, upon his return, he will feature on Smackdown Live on a full-time basis and rumors suggest that he will claim the title from AJ Styles and thereby will seek redemption. He is set to return on December 26 at the Madison Square Garden arena in a house show.
