Superstars backing down from Saudi Arabia shows continue as Kevin Owens is the latest name into the context. Reports from Fightful Select confirmed that the former Universal Champion has informed that he doesn’t want to compete at the event on June 7 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This is the reason why WWE had to book Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston for Super ShowDown for the WWE Championship.

Originally, it was going to be a rematch from Money in the Bank between Kevin Owens and Kofi Kingston in Saudi Arabia. This is why the two continued to take shots on each other on this week’s Smackdown. However, their upcoming match may get pushed back to Stomping Grounds PPV instead of Super ShowDown as Owns is not visiting the middle-east country.
The rivalry between Kofi Kingston and Kevin Owens has become personal over the past few weeks. This led to a title match at Money in the Bank where the champions retained. Kofi-mania was running wild over the WWE Universe when Owens decided to join the movement. Big E was out from Smackdown nursing a knee injury that could keep him out for a long time. So, we actually had a Big O aka Kevin Owens who wanted to replace the third member of The New Day.
But there’s a different version of Kevin Owens which is the Prizefighter of the WWE who could do anything to grab a championship. This version of Owens looked more vicious than ever since he was coming back from an injury. Picking up the WWE title could put him back into the top spot, again. Therefore, a rematch over the championship looked evident in Saudi Arabia. But he does not look interested to go back just like his fellow Canadian, Sami Zayn.
In case you don’t know, Sami Zayn is a Syrian Muslim by religion which does not go well with the Saudi Arabia culture. WWE opted him out of The Greatest Royal Rumble last year due to “respect of local Saudi culture”. His Syrian decent may not allow him to compete, this year too in case WWE treats the situation on a serious note. WWE released a statement previously on him that stated,
“WWE is committed to embracing individuals from all backgrounds while respecting local customs and cultural differences around the world.”
But the exact cause why Kevin Owens has decided to step aside from Saudi Arabia show is still unknown.
