John Cena returned to the WWE scene at the very end of 2018. He appeared on both WWE Raw and Smackdown Live for a couple of weeks before going into Hollywood. It’s interesting to note that WWE never acknowledged it in a straight way. Rather they produced a kayfabe injured news with the following statements,
“John Cena’s status in the Men’s Royal Rumble Match is in question following an apparent left ankle injury sustained during the main event of last week’s edition of Raw, WWE can now confirm. The injury was exacerbated earlier today as Cena was training his legs at the gym, which has cast doubt on whether he will be able to compete in the 30-Man Royal Rumble Match this Sunday.”
Why John Cena missed Royal Rumble?
Regardless what John Cena is doing right now, it’s almost confirmed that he will make an appearance at Wrestlemania 35. Despite being the part-timer, he finds time to come back to appear on this particular night of the year. This is the biggest event of the year where the franchise player’s presence remains a must.
Nothing unlikely should happen this year, too. His current movie schedule spans from February 4th to April 4th that means he will have a free date three days later i.e. Wrestlemania 35. Speculations are high at this point trying to find out which superstar is going to be his opponent on that night.
John Cena punished by WWE officials
According to a report from the Dirty Sheets Podcast, WWE has dropped plans for John Cena vs. Lars Sullivan at WrestleMania 35. They are rather considering a matchup against Drew McIntyre for him on the ‘show of shows.’ This can very well be a confirmed match now that WWE has showcased McIntyre who injured him.
But there’s a backup plan, as well as stated by wwfoldschool.com,
“Some WWE officials are suggesting to bring The Velveteen Dream up to the WWE main roster from NXT and book him in a match against Cena at WrestleMania 35.”

Velveteen Dream also fuelled up this match stating that a match against Cena is evident to happen. He posted this on the social media to hint this match a long time ago. It will be interesting to see this fresh matchup now that Dream debuted on the main roster.
Previously the plan was to start a program between Lars Sullivan and John Cena at Royal Rumble. But the NXT superstar could not make his debut due to an anxiety attack. This made Vince McMahon angry and he might have scrapped the match, altogether.
