Despite being a so-called B-grade show in the PPV calendar, WWE arranged the No Mercy PPV as one of the biggest events of 2017. The dual main events of the show featured two first-ever matches that certainly has the potential to be the main event of Wrestlemania. In the first one, John Cena took on Roman Reigns in a battle between the two franchise players of the company.
In the second one, the Universal Championship was on the line as Brock Lesnar defended the title against his biggest threat, till date. It was none other than Braun Strowman pitted against him to snatch his title away. There was no doubt that the challenger was the favourite one heading into the match.
The finishing saw a predictable ending, however, where despite the efforts from the monster among men, the beast retained his title. It was no doubt the match became physical one which took out a lot from the behemoth that Lesnar is. But, after a lot of punishment, it only took only one F-5 to put Strowman away.
According to some fans, the finish was not worthy and not favourable to Braun Strowman. He has the capability of evading an ambulance crash, as we have seen before but he took the pinfall after only one F-5 from Lesnar.
But, as per the reports of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Vince McMahon was quite happy how the finish went down. The Boss was happy to see the beast’s legend continuing in the WWE. Although Strowman was the biggest threat to him, he toppled the challenge. Plus, pinning his opponent with just one F-5 solidified the finishing manoeuvre’s effectiveness to a certain extent.
Coming to the Cena vs Reigns match, there’s no doubt that it might have been the match of the year between the two veteran players of the circuit. The match was planned to deliver some Wrestlemania calibre actions to the fans, and they were certainly able to deliver to that extent.
Overall, McMahon could not be happier, as the way things turned out to be with the Raw-exclusive event from Los Angeles. Going forward, at the TLC PPV, we might get even a bigger moment in the form of a Shield reunion.
