With the announcement of Night of Champions 2023 in late May, it’s likely that the WWE Universe will be kept waiting to know the status of the King of the Ring tournament and the women’s iteration that was attached to it.

Back in March 2023, WWE announced the return of the King of the Ring tournament and a titular pay-per-view, the first one under the old-school gimmick since 2002. In addition to the men’s tourney, the event would also see the crowning of a Queen of the Ring after Zelina Vega won the inaugural Queen’s Crown Tournament in the 2021 Crown Jewel pay-per-view.

Things changed around those confirmations in the past few days as WWE later announced that the pay-per-view was converted into Night of Champions 2023. On April 13, the announcement came from WWE’s part, leading to speculation over the future of the tournaments. In an update, PWInsider Elite reports that these two tournaments are “less likely” to return at the upcoming event.

It’s being rumored that King of the Ring’s conversion to Night of Champions 2023 was due to Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. The PPV takes place Saturday, May 27, which will be day 1,000 of Reigns’ tenure as champion.

After skipping Backlash on May 6 in Puerto Rico, Roman Reigns is expected to compete at Night of Champions 2023. If not then a special championship celebration has also been speculated around him for quite some time on that particular night set to emanate from the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
