Last week’s WWE SmackDown on FOX opened with a controversial angle where Renee Young informed that Elias was bumped into a car and needed medical attention. Apparently, an intoxicated Jeff Hardy was behind the car crash that took place outside the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida, injuring Elias.
The segment ended where we saw Elias was being taken away in an ambulance, whereas the police arrested Jeff as they received alcohol smell from him. Jeff Hardy and Elias were then kept aside from the Intercontinental Championship tournament match against their scheduled opponent, AJ Styles, and Daniel Bryan, respectively.
Jeff Hardy was eventually back on Smackdown by the end by interfering with the main event match between Daniel Bryan and Sheamus. He distracted Sheamus allowing Bryan to deliver a Flying Knee and pick up the win. The Charismatic Enigma would then stand tall in the middle of the ring after attacking Sheamus and forcing him to retreat. He appeared to be just fine as the commentary team wondered how he was able to get rid of the police.
WWE then issued a “breaking news” storyline update once SmackDown went off the air to note that Jeff Hardy was released from Orlando Police custody because he ‘passed the required sobriety tests. Hardy was absolved of the original charges’, which were ‘public intoxication, driving under the influence, and the hit-and-run on Elias’.

WWE made things interesting on Smackdown by using Jeff Hardy in the most controversial way where they used a real-life angle from the former WWE Champion’s life. The creative team of the company chose to charge Hardy with ‘public intoxication and DUI’ as Hardy was mostly charged with these allegations in his life to gain some negative fame.
He’s been involved in two such real-life instances after in 2019 while he was in a hiatus from the WWE, dealing with an injury. While the angle garnered a lot of attention from the fans, WWE has been receiving a lot of fan backlash on social media over this opening segment of this week’s SmackDown. The current speculation is the angle that will help WWE to continue the ongoing feud between Jeff Hardy and Sheamus that would eventually lead to a singles contest at Backlash PPV.
