The injury season continues on WWE Raw as reported earlier and one more name has been added to the list. This time, the news came around one-half of the reigning WWE Tag Team Champions, Sami Zayn. He was already spotted with a swollen elbow which has now been confirmed to be a legit injury.
As seen on this week’s episode of WWE Raw, Sami Zayn was originally set to take part in a huge six-man tag team match in the main event. Things didn’t work out well for him after getting attacked, backstage by JD McDonagh and Shinsuke Nakamura took over for him also which allowed the King of Strong Styles to turn heel on the reigning World Heavyweight Champion.
Now the updated reports suggest that there was a legitimate injury reason why Sami Zayn couldn’t wrestle in that match on WWE Raw. During Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that Sami Zayn’s injury angle on Raw was due to a bursa sac injury and it’s happened for real. His elbow is giving him trouble, and WWE had to chalk out the injury angle to keep him sidelined.

WWE Raw: Both tag team champions are currently injured
“I wonder what they’re gonna do with the tag team titles. Kevin can work, the whole idea was that since they decided not to book him for SummerSlam – if they booked him for SummerSlam, he would have kept working and done SummerSlam,” Meltzer discussed the state of the tag titles on WWE Raw.
“But when the decision was made not to put a tag team title match on SummerSlam, they decided to shoot an angle to get him off and get him a little bit of rest.”
It was also informed by the source that the injury “was only supposed to be a short period of rest, that’s why they didn’t take the belts off (them) or anything like that.” Hopefully, Owens and Zayn’s injury won’t indeed force them to vacate their belts.
A few weeks ago, Kevin Owens was attacked on WWE Raw to get hurt and it appears that this isn’t just a storyline angle for him. Owens was in the corner of his tag team partner Sami Zayn who challenged Dominik Mysterio for the NXT North American Championship on the July 24 episode. While doing so, he was attacked by Ripley and Priest in a kayfabe way but he’s injured, for real.
