Just after winning the Women’s Tag Team Championships, Ronda Rousey made a bold statement to become a fighting champion despite being heels. In fact, WWE itself has plans to insert the UFC Hall of Famer into the WWE tag team division with the sole intention of elevating the status of the tag championships, in the first place.
As a result, we have seen Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler almost going through their first championship defense just seven days after winning those belts on Raw. The former WWE NXT women’s tag team champions Kayden Carter and Katana Chance were picked as their opponents and they got one big way to make their presence felt during their main roster debut.
Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler taken to their limits on Raw
As seen on the June 5 episode of Raw, the team of Carter and Chance challenged the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler in a non-title match in a backstage segment. As noted above, the champions had no problems putting their titles on the line but for the time being, WWE hosted this match without those belts at stake.
The newcomers from NXT were rolling at one point in the match for a while. The tandem offense almost earned them the win as The After Party nearly took out Ronda Rousey but Baszler quickly entered the ring to make the save into for the save. The champions finally took over as Baszler showed some technical offenses before forcing Carter to tap out via the Kirifuda Clutch submission maneuver.
WWE Raw: Ronda Rousey Still Planned For Time Off Despite Recent Comeback
Thus, the debut of the longest-reigning NXT 2.0 Women’s Tag Team Champions was unsuccessful but they did have an impressive outing with multi-time former champions to have an impressive start, nonetheless. This should possibly earn them future title match opportunities against Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler.
Last month during the 2023 Draft, several call-ups from WWE NXT went down and the tag team of Carter and Chance were among them as they were drafted to Raw during the sixth and final round of televised picks. The two are expected to be assets for the women’s tag team division for a long time.
As for Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler, they became the new WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions by defeating three more teams Bayley & IYO SKY, Sonya Deville & Chelsea Green, and the brand new pair of Raquel Rodriguez & Shotzi in a fatal-4-way, last week on Raw.
