The latest episode of WWE Smackdown was a special one from the grand Madison Square Garden Arena in New York City. The Bloodline expectedly headlined the show but the longest match of the night featured Edge and Grayson Waller in a singles contest. This also marked the latter’s debut match on the main roster after being drafted in late April.

Since then Waller has been hosting “The Grayson Waller Effect” talk show on WWE TV. At Money in the Bank 2023, he had a segment with WWE Legend John Cena. Then a week later on WWE SmackDown, he got WWE Hall of Famer Edge to appear on his talk show.

Edge announced that he will be facing Grayson on WWE SmackDown, as he wanted to find out if the newbie will sink or swim. Eventually, Grayson ended up losing to The Rated-R Superstar, but he earned Edge’s as the legend said to him the following after the match, “Hey Waller, you swam.”

In an update on the situation on WWE Smackdown, WRKD Wrestling noted that WWE Officials see big things in the future of the 33-year-old superstar:

“If it wasn’t clear from his work with Cena at Money in the Bank or Edge on SmackDown, Grayson Waller is being set up for a big future. Many in creative feel that he has the tools, both wrestling and on the mic, to be a future main eventer for years to come.”

WWE Smackdown: Reason behind Grayson’s loss to Edge

Now, since Grayson is being treated as a future superpower in the WWE, many questioned why Edge didn’t actually put him over on WWE Smackdown by digesting a loss much like he did Austin Theory before Wrestlemania. To answer the question, Dave Meltzer noted during Wrestling Observer Radio, that fans have to be patient when it comes to Grayson’s push,

“They still have the idea that if you get beaten by a star, you’re seen as a bigger star because you’re in the ring with them. And depending on how the match works, sometimes that’s the case… I was surprised [Waller] wrestled because I didn’t think he’d be back this soon.”

Grayson was drafted from NXT to the WWE Smackdown brand but he remained out of action since after challenging Carmelo Hayes for the NXT title. Grayson claimed to have suffered a broken leg during that match and he had reportedly been in rehabilitation since then. Despite his absence from in-ring action, he garnered attention with his mic skills.
