A rare situation will occur on this week’s WWE Smackdown when WWE Hall of Famer Edge returns to action. He will square off against one of his dream opponents, AJ Styles as well as another WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio in a massive Triple Threat Main Event Matchup.
This matchup will be part of the ongoing tournament over the World Heavyweight Championship. Participants for the tourney were announced following Backlash 2023 Premium Live Event, followed by the actual match lineups for WWE Raw and Smackdown, this week.
WWE Raw: Huge Championship Match, Return And More Booked For May 15 Episode
With that, it was clear that Edge was returning on TV, this week for the first time since Wrestlemania 39 where he defeated the “Demon” Finn Balor in a Hell in a Cell Match. Since then, we haven’t spotted him on TV but he was inserted into the 2023 Draft pool to be picked up by the WWE Smackdown brand.
WWE Smackdown: Edge set to return on May 12 episode
Now, for the first time since 2021, Edge will appear on the May 12 episode of WWE Smackdown to look forward to one more shot at the world heavyweight title that he previously held on seven different occasions. Edge vs. AJ Styles is a dream bout that previously took place at Wrestlemania 38 and then at Wrestlemania Backlash 2022. Edge also had feuded with Rey Mysterio on different occasions during his first stint with the WWE.
Apart from this matchup, another Triple Threat has been booked on WWE Smackdown to determine a semi-finalist with the lineup standing Bobby Lashley vs. Sheamus vs. Austin Theory.
The tournament for the new World Heavyweight Championship began this week on WWE Raw. In the first qualifier, Seth Rollins defeated Damian Priest and Shinsuke Nakamura in a Triple Threat Match to advance to the Semi-Finals of the World Heavyweight Championship tournament.
In the second qualifier, Finn Balor defeated The Miz and Cody Rhodes in a Triple Threat Match to advance to the Semi-Finals of the World Heavyweight Championship tournament. Then in the main event semi-final match on Raw, Seth Rollins defeated Finn Balor to advance to the Finals of the World Heavyweight Championship tournament at Night of Champions and he now awaits a WWE Smackdown Superstar to join him in the finale.
