John Cena will return to the WWE after an absence of more than six months during the upcoming Smackdown episode on December 30th. Being perhaps the most popular superstar of his era, the news of his return has already stirred things up for the WWE Universe. WWE obviously wants to get the most out of his appearance since the announcement of his showing up already resulted in a greater amount of ticket selling.
Following his unexpected appearance on the SmackDown episode of December 16th, the assumption is that John Cena’s upcoming match will be something to remember for a long time. Besides this, it will also continue a remarkable run for him in his WWE career.

John Cena appeared in a via-satellite video appearance on the latest bygone Friday night Smackdown to reveal that he will team up with Kevin Owens on the SmackDown episode airing on December 30 at the Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida. The two babyfaces will compete against the team of Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn.
As noted in his promo, The Cenation Leader will compete in his first match in 2022. He last competed on WWE television at SummerSlam 2021, when he came up short of challenging for Roman Reigns’ Universal Championship in the main event of summer’s biggest PPV.
John Cena has performed in at least one match in WWE since debut every year
The general belief after that was that John Cena will not be seen in any match on WWE TV in 2022. However, after the December 30th episode of SmackDown, he will have competed for WWE every year since making his main roster debut in. The 16-time champion wanted to keep that record intact and hence he took time from his busy schedule to feature in a match on WWE programming.
Rumors are there that John Cena could possibly announce his Royal Rumble appearance during the Smackdown appearance but for that, we’ll have to wait for that episode. Prior to this, he appeared on WWE Raw June 27 episode exactly 20 years after making his WWE SmackDown debut against Kurt Angle in 2002.
Sean Sapp reported behind Fightful’s paywall that there have been “discussions within WWE and even plans to integrate John Cena into upcoming episodes of Smackdown even before he arrives.” The same happened on this past Smackdown and it may repeat on the December 23 episode this week.
