We witnessed a very special edition of Smackdown Live, this week. The night was headlined by a never-before-seen dream match between John Cena and Shinsuke Nakamura. Also, the United States Championship was on the line in the third singles encounter between AJ Styles and Kevin Owens. Check out the results from the evening hosted at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
WWE Smackdown kicked off with the United States championship match between AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura. The crowd was extremely flat during this bout. The finishing segment saw Owens going for a pop-up power bomb but Styles countering it to a roll up and get the pinfall in a controversial fashion as Owens’ shoulder was up.
This led to a chaotic situation after the match as Owens started yelling at the officials. The show runners were also present on the scene. Daniel Bryan suggested that a rematch between these two would be booked at Summerslam with Shane McMahon serving as the special guest referee.
The Usos cut a promo in front of the audience and went on to brag about the fact how they outnumbered the New Day with a vicious attack. They left the ring after the mic work was finished. Aftermath, Fandango claimed that he found out the attacker who was sneaking from behind for weeks.
Sami Zayn had a singles match with Aiden English. This witnessed a quick result, as the heel one picked up the win via a roll-up. Sami was seemingly upset, as Mike and Maria Kanellis came out to celebrate his loss with the Power of Love.
Rusev had a matchup with Chad Gable as announced earlier. He earned the victory by super-kicking Gable’s head off and locking in the Accolade on the former American Alpha member.
Following the match, he cut a heel promo about not getting enough competition on Smackdown Live. His promo was cut short by a returning Randy Orton who was ready to be his opponent at Summerslam. Rusev became furious with this announcement and went on to attack Orton but an RKO put an end to all his resistance.
Becky Lynch and Naomi got a tag team match against Carmella and Natalya. During the end, Carmella tagged herself in against Naomi by disrespecting Natalya. The champion locked in her own submission move to make Carmella tap out and win the contest.
In the main event, the dream match between Cena and Nakamura took place on Smackdown Live. The franchise was on the verge to pick up the win by hitting not one but two AAs but Nakamura managed to kick out and connect with his Kinshasa move to pick up the win and become the number one contender for Jinder Mahal’s WWE Championship.
