Tuesday Night’s hottest show gave a hint of the upcoming future by addressing the fallouts from Summerslam PPV. Apparently, these storylines will be continuing for this fall. Things are expected to heat up gradually as the next PPV from their side is in the month of October. Here’s what happened on Smackdown Live hosted by the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
WWE Smackdown kicked off with the United States champion, AJ Styles who received a usual standing ovation from the crowd. Being a fighting champion, he reinstated the US title open challenge to which anybody from the locker room can answer. Kevin Owens came out to accept it but Styles said that they are already done at Summerslam.
Owens went on to put the blame on Shane McMahon for screwing him over on this past Sunday. The Commissioner came out with a big reception and stated that he called down the match, fairly. Owens demanded yet another title match with a referee chosen by him. Styles agreed setting up the main event of the night.
Aiden English stood in the middle of the ring singing a song. The former NXT Champion, Bobby Roode’s music started to play who made his debut on Smackdown Live, big time. The Brooklyn crowd gave him a wild welcoming reception. Roode picked up his maiden main roster win by putting Aiden down with a glorious DDT.
Daniel Bryan had a backstage segment with Chad Gable where he apologized to him for letting his partner Jason Jordan move to Raw. But, Bryan introduced him to a new partner it turned out to be none other than the returning Shelton Benjamin. He will start teaming up with Gable from next week onwards.
Natalya and Carmella teamed up in a tag team contest against Naomi and Becky Lynch. Prior to the match, Carmella insulted Nattie with her harsh words. In the match, Carmella was downed by a clothesline from Becky after which Naomi hit the split legged moon-sault to pick up the win.
Shinsuke Nakamura was given a match against the Singh Brothers to seek retribution from Summerslam. Despite the combined resistance, The Artist locked in the chokehold to Samir to get the victory. Jinder Mahal tried to deliver a post match assault to Nakamura but was neutralized by a Kinshasa.
Lana and Tamina had yet another backstage segment where they vowed to get into the title picture from next week onwards. Dolph Ziggler returned to Smackdown for an interview where he hinted to debut his next gimmick. The Usos defeated The Hype Bros in a non-title tag team contest.
In the main event of Smackdown, Baron Corbin was the special guest referee in the US title match between Owens and Styles. Corbin started to act partially for Owens that brought Shane McMahon into the ring. He did the referee’s role by counting the pinfall for Styles after he hit with a Phenomenal Forearm to Owens. Styles retained the championship as the show closed for this week.
