WWE: Smackdown Live Full Results: January 2, 2018

With controversies surrounding the show, Smackdown Live hosted its first edition for the year 2018. We expected to receive a big fallout from what happened on last week’s main event match to set up a new WWE title match. Plus, the tag team championship was also set to take place on the show. Here’s how all of those went down from the Amway Center in Orlando, Florida.

WWE Smackdown kicked off with AJ Styles who provided his New Year resolution and then complained about Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. It led Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon to come to the ring and have a confrontation. They informed that both of them would be present at ringside during the main event to provide a neutral environment.

The tag team championship match took place between The Usos and Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable. The challengers were able to pin Jimmy Uso with their finishing manoeuvre which was not legal. So, the referee was forced to restart the match. The Usos hit the superkick on their opponents following a splash to retain their titles.

Natalya, Carmella, Lana, and Tamina talked about how The Welcoming Committee dominated Smackdown when there was no Riott Squad. These two teams had a six-woman tag team match. Tamina was rolling in the match which was shoved off the top rope via distraction. Sarah Logan pinned her with a kick to win the match.

After the match, The Riott Squad announced their entry to the Royal Rumble match. Charlotte Flair appeared on the ramp with Naomi. They introduced a returning Becky Lynch who sought her redemption on the heel faction. The trio went on to deliver a ruthless beating on each member of the squad to put them away from the ring.

In the United State Championship tournament first round match, Aiden English was defeated by Xavier Woods. He will face Jinder Mahal in the second round matchup. In another tag team match, The Bludgeon Brothers squashed Breezango and The Ascension to prove their dominance.

In the main event, AJ Styles had the singles contest against Sami Zayn with the authority figures standing at the ringside area. A miscommunication broke out, as the referee ejected Kevin Owens from the ringside. Daniel Bryan proceeded to walk away from the match with Owens who pledged to stay.

This miscommunication allowed Sami Zayn to connect with the Helluva Kick on Styles to pick up the win. The champion seemed irate about this misunderstanding going on and on between Bryan and McMahon. The general manager then announced that AJ Styles would be facing Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens in a triple threat title match at Royal Rumble to close Smackdown.
