This week’s episode of Smackdown Live was the go-home episode for the 31st annual Royal Rumble PPV. Following earlier night’s Raw 25th anniversary the hype-ups were already there for the dual brand event. Meanwhile, two contenders for the WWE Championship returned to build the title scenario up more. Check out the results of the show hosted by the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Smackdown Live kicked off with Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn who talked about their future win over the WWE Championship. They were interrupted by AJ Styles, soon whose mic was cut short by Daniel Bryan. Following his bizarre comments, the GM sanctioned two back to back matched for Styles against Owens and Zayn.
The opening contest of the evening marked a singles match between Jey Uso and Chad Gable. The respective tag team partners for both of them were present at the ringside. Jey missed a splash off the rope allowing Gable to capitalise delivering a German suplex and forming a bridge for the win.
Liv Morgan had a one-on-one match against Naomi on Smackdown Live. The Riott Squad, Natalya, Lana, and Carmella were present at the ringside area. To make things even for Naomi, Becky Lynch came down to ringside in the middle of the match. The babyface superstar hit a sunset flip on Morgan for the win.
After the match, all the members of the Riott Squad and the Welcoming Committee started brawling with each other. In the end, Becky Lynch and Naomi stood tall. Becky was able to throw Naomi over the top indicating a win at Royal Rumble. Charlotte Flair came out and wished good luck to all the ladies for Royal Rumble.
Following a backstage segment, Shinsuke Nakamura had a match against Baron Corbin. Nakamura was rolling and about to deliver a Kinshasa on the heel when Randy Orton showed up and delivered an RKO, out of nowhere. The crowd erupted, as he delivered a second RKO to put Corbin down.
The New Day members announced their name to the Royal Rumble match before their six-man tag team action. Bobby Roode controlled the match for the most part and put English down with a spinebuster. Xavier Woods delivered a flying elbow into English to get the pinfall.
Before the main event, Shane McMahon announced if Owens remains present on Zayn’s match and vice versa then they will be fired. Capitalising on this, AJ Styles picked up the win against Owens. Zayn attacked Styles from the back to get upper hand. He delivered a Helluva kick on Styles to get the win and get momentums for Royal Rumble.
