WWE Smackdown will have a major championship match on the card during next week’s episode. The show to bring more builds for Clash at the Castle 2022 will witness WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther defending his title on this August 12 edition. Shinsuke Nakamura will be the challenger for the title match to continue the ongoing feud between the two.
Nakamura earned a title shot by defeating Gunther’s ally Ludwig Kaiser on last night’s WWE SmackDown by pinning him with the Kinshasa finisher move. It was the overall third match between Nakamura and Kaiser in recent times.

Nakamura previously scored a decisive pinfall win on the July 8 episode of WWE SmackDown. Then Kaiser sought redemption, two weeks later after taking advantage of a ringside distraction by Gunther. He planted Nakamura with a DDT to score the upset win that also marked his first win after coming to the main roster.
Now, Nakamura pinned him back to possibly sloe the array of matches which were the only singles matches for Kaiser since he was called up to WWE Smackdown alongside Gunther. Via this win, Nakamura has now earned his way back to the mid-card title picture of the WWE.

Gunther having a strong heel run on WWE Smackdown
Gunther has been presented as a dominant force on WWE SmackDown since he received the call-up back in April. He defeated Ricochet to win the Intercontinental Championship on the June 10 episode of the blue brand. Following that win, Gunther had only one title defense, so far. He defeated Ricochet in a rematch on the June 24 episode to retain the gold.
Prior to his call-up to WWE Smackdown, Gunther had a brief run on NXT. He never had the chance to hold the NXT Championship. The most memorable moment of his NXT stint was to culminate in a championship match against the current NXT Champion Bron Breakker in early April.
Gunther originally made his WWE debut in January 2019 at the NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool event by the name of WALTER. He went on to win the WWE NXT UK Championship and also held the title for 870 days before dropping it to Ilja Dragunov last August at NXT TakeOver 36. After coming to WWE Smackdown, WALTER was often considered to be the longest champion of the modern era.
