WWE held the second episode of SmackDown of 2021 trying to build up the storylines for the Royal Rumble PPV. The Tag Team Championships were on the line in a rematch while the Intercontinental Champion was also hanging on the balance in the first title defense for the champion. Universal Champion Roman Reigns kicked off SmackDown talking about his attack on Owens and how he’s injured. Adam Pearce came out to have a conversation with him but Reigns started to insult him, instead. He grabbed Pearce by collars before leaving the ring.

WWE Intercontinental Title Match with the lineup of Apollo Crews vs. Big E was the opening match of SmackDown where E had the Stretch Muffler submission locked in. Crews fought out of it and hit a kick on E’s temple. Crews ran down only to be caught with a Uranage in the corner. E then finished off the contest by hitting his Big Ending move for the pinfall win.
