Sonya Deville has been a regular fixture on WWE TV for the past several months. Earlier this year, she made a return to WWE programming from an extended hiatus. She was originally forced to leave the WWE in the summer of 2020 but it was done for storyline purposes. Following her return, her character has undergone big changes.
As we can see on both WWE Raw and Smackdown, Sonya Deville has now become an on-screen authority figure. Per her words, this change came about almost by accident as she was pitching an idea to WWE Chairman Vince McMahon. At the time, she was preparing to make a return to WWE TV after losing a “Loser Leaves WWE” match to Mandy Rose at SummerSlam 2020.

“It was actually a conversation with Vince where I was in his office,” Sonya Deville recalled in an interview with The Metro in the United Kingdom. “We were talking about how I was gonna re-debut and I just kind of mentioned to him that I had these three-piece suits that I’d been waiting to wear on TV and that I thought a cool part of my character could be that I rock lady suits and I’m kind of a bad B, and I could be a boss.”

Sonya Deville praised Vince McMahon for her authority role
Sonya Deville had no idea at the time that she was actually going to be an on-screen boss for the WWE superstars. The transition to becoming an authority role concept was not on her mind when she suggested wearing suits on TV. But it was the creative genius in Vince McMahon who executed this change,
“I wasn’t speaking literally,” Sonya Deville explained. “But [Vince McMahon] kind of sat there and envisioned what I was saying with the suits. He was like, ‘Do you have one on you?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, I have my all-black one but it’s at my hotel.’”
“He’s like, ‘We’ll send someone to go get it. Next thing you know, I was walking down the hallway in a three-piece suit. I didn’t know where it was going, and it just organically evolved from there.”
The December 10 episode of Smackdown on FOX from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California was scheduled to feature Sonya Deville in competition against Naomi. But then Natalya and Shayna Baszler have been announced as her special guest ring announcer and the special guest timekeeper.
The three heels were about to launch an attack on Naomi when Xia Li made her Smackdown debut. Li and Naomi teamed up to clear the ring and shove Natalya and Baszler off it. Li then delivered a roundhouse kick on Sonya Deville to end the segment.
