As the United States Champion, Austin Theory is making a splash on WWE Smackdown since the Wrestlemania season. He’s already defeated the likes of former WWE Champions like John Cena, Sheamus, and even a Hall of Famer in Edge to solidify his status as a strong champion. The brass heel is now set to receive his next opponent through a championship invitational.

Heading into this week’s WWE Smackdown, a Fatal-4-way match was advertised to kick things off in the United States Championship Invitational, which will comprise multiple future matches. This first match had AJ Styles, Butch, Grayson Waller, and Santos Escobar competing against each other with the winner advancing to take on the winner of next week’s fatal-4-way matchup. The two winners from these two matches will battle it out for a shot at Theory on the July 28 episode of WWE Smackdown.

WWE Smackdown: Santos Escobar advances in an invitational

As mentioned above, Escobar defeated AJ Styles, Grayson Waller, and Butch to advance. Styles, being a former champion in the WWE, appeared to have the match under his control until a video came up on the tron showing Karrion Kross attacking his OC partners – Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows backstage. The distracted Styles as Escobar entered the ring, landed a splash from the top rope to Waller to secure the victory.

WWE Smackdown: Updates From Championship Invitational On July 14 Episode 2

Next week on WWE Smackdown, LA Knight, Rey Mysterio, Sheamus, and Cameron Grimes will compete in the next fatal-4-way to determine Escobar’s opponent for the July 28 blue brand episode. The date of the eventual winner of this invitational to compete against Theory is yet to be announced but with SummerSlam approaching closer, we can certainly expect the dual to happen at the upcoming premium live event.

Austin Theory has been the United States Champion before Wrestlemania 39. In the April PLE, he defeated John Cena in what was the biggest win of his career. Most recently, he overcame Sheamus to be successful in retaining his mid-card title.
