In a surprise altercation on this week’s WWE Smackdown, it was announced that there will be only one set of Women’s Tag Team Championships. To date, there was one on the main roster while the NXT Women’s division had its separate tag championship. But now there will be only one, possibly suggesting that these titles will travel across all three brands of the WWE.
As seen on WWE Smackdown, Kayla Braxton was about to introduce NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn to the audience as they had been the new draftees on the blue brand from NXT. But before the introduction could be done properly, WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler interrupted the segment.

Two pairs of tag champs had a face-off on WWE Smackdown
Ronda was quick to point out that the women’s tag team division isn’t big enough for them over WWE Raw and WWE Smackdown and so they want to take over Alba and Isla’s NXT division too. Then Shayna Baszler added that she was the reason that the NXT tag team championships came to daylight in the first place.
Ronda then quickly laid down a challenge for the Title Unification Match which was accepted on the spot. Alba and Isla then took the first blow, trying to attack Rousey, Baszler made the save for Rousey and the reigning WWE Women’s Tag Team champions opted to retreat from the ring.
WWE Smackdown: Charlotte Flair Returns And Challenges For New Women’s Championship
Soon after this segment, WWE announced a match to unify the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship (held by Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler) and the NXT Women’s Tag Team Championship (held by Alba Fyre and Isla Dawn) on the June 23 episode of WWE Smackdown which will be just eight days before the 2023 Money in the Bank premium live event.
The announcement also clarifies the status of the NXT women’s tag team belts as Fyre and Dawn was called up to the WWE Smackdown brand during the 2023 edition of Draft. These belts were introduced back in 2021 and after 12 total number reigns on the NXT brand, Fyre and Dawn will now be remembered as the final NXT Women’s Tag Team Champions. They defeated Kiana James and Fallon Henley in April to win those championships.
