WWE came up with the 31st annual Summerslam event last night. It was a night filled up with shockers to make it one of the summer’s bests to date. In total, we had nine championships matches on the card alongside some big-feel marquee matches. Here are the results from the show hosted by the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Pre-show:
Rusev & Lana vs. Andrade Cien Almas & Zelina Vega (Mixed tag team match)
Summerslam kicked off with this entertaining mixed tag team match. Lana was the main attraction of this match who did a Spinarooni for the crowd. Almas distracted her while she delivered a Machka Kick on Vega. Rusev went for retribution but hit the barricade hard. This shenanigan allowed Vega to roll her up for the win.
Cedric Alexander vs. Drew Gulak (Cruiserweight Championship)
Gulak was on the verge to get the win via a Gu-Lock. Alexander countered it hitting a back elbow. Gulak came back into the contest with an Ankle Lock following with a Spanish Fly. But Alexander kicked out and came up with a roll-up to retain the title at Summerslam.
The B-Team vs. The Revival (WWE Raw tag team championship)
The B-team was able to retain their title at Summerslam despite The Revival dominating the match. They hit an early Shatter Machine to Axel. He came back after the heel duo beat up Dallas, badly. Axel fell into a Dawson cradle but Dallas broke it up. Axel came up with yet another roll-up win on the pre-show.
Main show:
Bludgeon Brothers (c) vs. The New Day (Smackdown tag team championship)
The Smackdown tag team championship ended via disqualification. The New Day was in firm control of the match. Woods and Big E went for the Midnight Hour inside the ring. But Harper blasted E with the Mallet lying outside. The referee had to call off the match thereafter. Harper continued attacking E with the Mallet in hand even after the match was over.
Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. Seth Rollins (Intercontinental championship)
A shenanigan broke out at the ringside as Drew McIntyre sent Ambrose into the steel steps. But Rollins caught Ziggler with a Buckle Bomb inside the ring. Ambrose planed McIntyre with a Dirty Deeds on the floor! Rollins hit a super-kick followed by the Curb Stomp to win the IC title at Summerslam.
Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Jeff Hardy (U.S. championship)
Randy Orton did not bother to interfere in this matchup. But Nakamura pulled off a fair win, anyway. Hardy dominated the match and finished it with a Twist of Fate and Swanton Bomb. Nakamura grabbed the bottom rope to break the pinfall. He countered another Swanton from Hardy and delivered the Kinshasa for the win.
Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin
It was a short matchup which witnessed the return of the Demon Finn Balor. He was all over the place hitting two Sling Blades and running drop-kicks. Thereafter, the Coup De grace put an early end to the Summerslam squash match.
Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens (Money in the Bank contract match)
This match was another quick matchup in favor of Strowman. The monster ran over Owens hitting mammoth Shoulder Blocks. He delivered a chokeslam to Owens on the ramp. Thereafter, a Running Powerslam got the job done for Strowman.
Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz
This match did not live up to the hypes as expected from the Summerslam crowd. Daniel Bryan was all over the place hitting YES kicks to The Miz. He also locked in the YES Lock into The Miz. But he bit the hands of Bryan to get out of the lock. Maryse handed him a knuckle kind of thing. Miz hit Bryan with it all of a sudden to pick up the big win at Summerslam.
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Ronda Rousey (Raw women’s championship)
The Bella Twins and Natalya were present at the ringside for this Summerslam match. It was completely a one-sided affair dominated by Ronda Rousey. She had some judo takedowns on Bliss before giving a Samoan Drop. Later the arm-bar handed her the first WWE Raw women’s championship at Summerslam.
Carmella (c) vs. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte Flair (SmackDown women’s championship)
Carmella tried to build a rift between Charlotte and Becky Lynch from the get-go. Charlotte locked in the Figure-eight on Carmella. But Becky broke it via a leg-drop. Charlotte returned the favor big-time at the end of the match. She dropped Becky with a Natural Selection while the arm-bar was intact on Carmella. This earned her the championship win. Becky was irate and attacked Charlotte once the Summerslam match was over.
AJ Styles (c) vs. Samoa Joe (WWE championship)
The WWE Championship match was entertaining but ended in a DQ. AJ Styles was able to get out of the Coquina Clutch and plant Joe with the Styles Clash. But Joe kicked out of it and brought the fight to the ringside. He sent Styles into the ring steps and insulted his family. This made Styles frustrated forcing him to attack Joe with a chair. This led to a disqualification for the title match.
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns (Universal championship)
Roman Reigns connected with a series of superman punch and spears to Lesnar. But the beast got up and took Reigns to Suplex City right away. Thereafter he turned his attention to Strowman who was standing at the ringside. He gave the monster a beatdown and went back into the ring only to eat a spear. This earned Roman Reigns his first Universal Championship win to close Summerslam.
