WWE presented a huge edition of Super Smackdown of FOX from the Madison Square Garden in New York City. A series of matches were lined for the TV taping including Seth Rollins vs. WWE Hall of Famer Edge part II. Brock Lesnar was in attendance at the show where Finn Balor also brought back the Demon King ego to confront Roman Reigns. This was the segment that sent the actual show went off the air.
Following this segment, the dark main event took place for Super Smackdown where John Cena made his return to the WWE. He was already being advertised by the WWE and MSG websites for a special appearance to entertain the crowd present at the historic arena. Despite being busy with filming in the UK, the Cenation leader didn’t disappoint the WWE audience.
Extreme Rules 2021: Changes Made To WWE And Universal Title Matches
As seen on Super Smackdown dark segment, the 16-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion John Cena came out to a huge pop from the audience. Cena then teamed up with The Mysterios (Dominik and Rey Mysterio) to defeat The Bloodline (Universal Champion Roman Reigns and SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Usos) to send the fans at Madison Square Garden home, happy. Cena hit the AA on one of the Usos for the win.
Super Smackdown had big attendances for WWE Universe
This marked the first appearance for John Cena since the bygone Universal Title match against Roman Reigns at the main event of Summerslam 2021. Cena lost that match who also suffered an attack by the returning Brock Lesnar on that night. This way, he was written off WWE’s TV storyline perspective. The Super Smackdown appearance was his final appearance of this stint.
