Replacing the Raw Women’s Championship, a brand new WWE Womens Championship was unveiled on this week’s Smackdown, and thereby a prestigious title made its way back to the WWE programming. This was similar to the return of the World Heavyweight Championship belt in the WWE but the new belt isn’t carrying the lineage of the former Big Gold Belt created in the WCW.
Time will tell whether the WWE Womens Championship will follow that tradition or not. As of now, the title will shine on the waist of Asuka on Smackdown on Friday nights. The inaugural champion with this belt was The Fabulous Moolah, who won the title on September 18, 1956, which at that time was the NWA World Women’s Championship.

The Original WWE Womens Championship was introduced back in the 60s
The title was renamed the WWF Womens Championship in 1984 following Vince McMahon acquiring his father’s empire and starting the World Wrestling Federation. In May 2002, WWF was renamed to WWE, and hence the championship became the WWE Womens Championship.
From 2002 to 2008, there was only one WWE Womens Championship before Smackdown introduced the Divas Championship. The titles switched brands in April 2009 after which on September 19, 2010, at the Night of Champions, the Women’s Championship was unified with the Divas Championship, and thus the prestigious Women’s Championship was retired until now.

Layla is the final winner of the WWE Womens Championship
Total 30 champions and a combined 59 official reigns have been recognized for the WWE Womens Championship belt with The Fabulous Moolah being the longest-reigning champion during her third reign which lasted for 3841 days.
In May 2010, Layla became the first British woman and the first Diva Search winner to hold the championship and she eventually etched her name to be the last-ever WWE Women’s Champion if the previous lineage isn’t added to the newly introduced belt.
WWE Divas Championship was retired in 2016 at Wrestlemania 32 with the introduction of the WWE Raw Women’s Championship which was won by Charlotte Flair. Later in August, the Smackdown Women’s Championship was unveiled with Becky Lynch becoming the inaugural winner.
Asuka defeated Bianca Belair at Night of Champions to become the Raw Women’s Champion and thus she had the honor to receive the new WWE Womens Championship on this week’s Smackdown. She will go through her first title defense within three weeks against Charlotte Flair on Smackdown.
