Prior to the 2023 Draft, WWE introduced a new World Heavyweight Championship which seemed a long-time coming. Roman Reigns is an unbeatable as well as a part-time champion in the WWE for over three years. Alongside the Universal Championship, he has also hijacked the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar, last year to unify the two titles and bring a monopoly to the main event scene.
To alter the scene, the World Heavyweight Championship has been reintroduced in the WWE, exclusively to the Raw brand (since Roman Reigns was drafted exclusively to SmackDown, the Raw brand would be getting a new world title). Coming out of the Backlash 2023 press conference, we now know how the company will determine that rechristened title’s first holder at Night of Champions 2023.
WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Top 5 Favorites Revealed To Win The New Belt
On Friday night in Puerto Rico, at a press conference promoting tonight’s Backlash event, Triple H announced further details of the tournament to begin over the World Heavyweight Championship. The interesting part of the announcement is that despite the new world title being exclusive to Raw, the tournament will involve both Raw and SmackDown wrestlers.
“Starting after Backlash, this Monday night on Raw, we will begin a World Heavyweight Championship tournament,” Triple H explained the process of the World Heavyweight Championship tournament. “It will be across both brands. On ‘Monday Night Raw,’ there will be two triple threat matches, with the winners facing each other later that night to determine a winner for Monday Night Raw.”

World Heavyweight Championship tournament will consist of Raw and Smackdown superstars
The same process will go down on Friday Night Smackdown with Triple Threat Match winners facing each other in the main event to determine a winner from the Friday Night Smackdown brand. Then at Night of Champions 2023, an inter-brand match will go down for the World Heavyweight Championship with the respective brand’s winners colliding in a one-on-one scenario.
WWE has a lot going on, with the current UFC merger going down, and the current events mostly on international soil. An event in Puerto Rico will be followed by another massive show in Saudi Arabia, and then in the United Kingdom in July. By that time, we will have a new World Heavyweight Championship title holder on the red brand. Seth Rollins is the current favorite to be that person.
