Bringing back the World Heavyweight Championship was a long-term demand from WWE fans since it’s been a prestigious and workhorse belt of the sports entertainment business. With Roman Reigns hijacking the main event scene as well as the two top world titles in the WWE over a year despite his part-time schedule, the need for a secondary was also there.

As a result, the comeback of the World Heavyweight Championship seemed evident and WWE finally made it, official, last month. It was unveiled by Triple H, in response to Roman Reigns defending his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship, occasionally and not regularly.

The first champion of the newly introduced belt will be decided later this month at WWE Night of Champions, though WWE has given no details on the process of crowning the new holder of the World Heavyweight Championship belt. It will feature exclusively on the Raw brand, given that the undisputed champion Roman Reigns was drafted to SmackDown as the blue brand’s number-one pick.

During the latest episode of WWE’s The Bump, fans got a closer look at the new World Heavyweight Championship belt which is a redesigned version of the original “big gold belt.” The host Matt Camp explained the new design is a homage to the classic World Heavyweight Title belt which originally existed in WCW.

On the center plate of the new World Heavyweight Championship, there are three lions, representing the McMahon family crest. This crest was also present on a side plate for the 2002-2005 WWE Undisputed Championship. At the top of the center plate, a crown could be spotted which was on Bruno Sammartino’s WWWF Championship following his victory in 1963.

An eagle could also be found on the center plate, which was a regular design on the classic WWE Championship designs prior to 2013. 60 diamonds were added to the World Heavyweight Championship signifying the 60 years of the WWE Championship. Representing the three-ring ropes of the squared circle, the edge of each of the three plates is surrounded by a ring rope.

As noted above, the new holder of the World Heavyweight Championship will be declared at Night of Champions 2023, possibly via a tournament that will be underway on Raw in due course that will culminate at the PLE. Seth Rollins is the current favorite to emerge as the winner and the new champion.
