Weeks of rumors of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship being brought back finally got confirmed on this week’s Raw. Heading into the April 24 episode of Raw, there were rumblings of a big announcement being made on the show. Then on the actual show from Chicago, Illinois, the major announcement came from Triple H that would change the current state of the roster.
At the start of the second hour of Raw, the current head of the creative team had come out for a promo segment. He mentioned that as a WWE Superstar, he got to compete at the highest level and had the privilege to wrestle at WrestleMania 22 in Chicago, defending the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against one of the great of all time, John Cena in that same city at the All-State Arena.

Triple H then noted that was also privileged to talk about Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, who is nearing close to becoming a champion for 1,000 days. He showered praise on Reigns for surviving in tile defenses against some of the best that the company has to offer. Then he also mentioned how Reigns negotiated himself into a spot where he didn’t have to defend the title on frequent occasions.

It was added that Reigns is doing what’s good for him but not for WWE Universe who deserves more. With that, it was noted, that the Head of the Table will be drafted to whatever brand he’s drafted to at Draft 2023 and he will stay there with the undisputed title. As for the other brand, a new champion will be determined on May 27 at Night of Champions with the reintroduction of the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
“This will be a champion you can be proud of,” Triple H further declared that the workload around the WWE World Heavyweight Championship will be even bigger. “This will be a champion you can respect, that you can admire. This will be a champion that will defend this championship anywhere, any place, any time, all over the world.”
The last time a separate WWE World Heavyweight Championship was seen on TV was at TLC 2013 before it was merged with the WWE Title. It was fully retired after Summerslam 2014 during Brock Lesnar’s title reign. So for the first time in almost 9 years, WWE will have a new world heavyweight title holder at Night of Champions in late May.
