Former South African captain AB de Villiers was in the news during the recently concluded 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. Recently, the batting superstar spoke about his conversation with Faf du Plessis ahead of the team selection, and he added that he didn’t regret about that talk.
During the 2019 Cricket World Cup, the news was spread that AB de Villiers asked for his World Cup selection to the Proteas captain Faf du Plessis. Earlier in May 2018, AB decided to retire from international cricket.
Many experts have criticised AB de Villiers’ retirement U-turn decision ahead of the World Cup team selection.
Recently, the former South African captain clarified that he never demanded to return to the national squad. Now, he has claimed that his conversation with Faf du Plessis was private but casual.
AB recently told Standard Sport, “It wasn’t meant to get out, it was a private conversation. I won’t say I regret talking to Faf about it, it was just something I had to get off my chest and possibly left it a little bit late. It was a very casual chat between the two of us.
“There had been no communication from either party, it was a dead rubber, it was done, we’d all moved on but having listened to some of the rumours [about a return] I felt that it was necessary just to give Faf a call. The rest was history, but it was supposed to stay between us.”
It’s just an incredible story – AB de Villiers about England’s 2019 CWC trophy win
Talking about Eoin Morgan-led England team’s 2019 CWC victory, AB mentioned it was an incredible story.
Speaking on England’s maiden CWC trophy, AB said, “It’s just an incredible story and a great achievement.”
Since the last year, AB de Villiers and Eoin Morgan have become very good friends due to playing together in the inaugural Mzansi Super League (MSL). In the MSL 2018, both of them served for Tshwane Spartans. In that six-team competition, Tshwane Spartans finished in the fifth position.
Now, AB de Villiers is set to play for Middlesex in the 2019 English T20 Blast. Meanwhile, Eoin Morgan is also serving for Middlesex since 2006. So, once again, they are ready to play together this year.
The former Proteas captain is feeling excited to spend another great time with the England limited-overs captain Eoin Morgan.
AB added, “I’ve always had a huge amount of respect for Eoin, his whole life story of where he came from to actually achieve what he has. He’s a humble guy, never got ahead of himself, and he’s played some incredible knocks around the world. He stayed at my house for a few days [while playing for the Tshwane Spartans] so we know each other a little better now. We played a bit of golf here and there, had a couple of glasses of red.
“I remember skyping his parents, which was quite interesting, said hi to them, so I’m looking forward to catching up with him.”
AB de Villiers has experienced many T20 leagues. Since his international retirement, he is getting busy in various T20 leagues. However, it will be the first experience for AB de Villiers in English domestic cricket.
Among the South Africans, Chris Morris, Dwaine Pretorius and Imran Tahir will also feature in the upcoming English T20 league.
